The Tasman glacier looked entirely different than the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers.  The bottom 10-15 km of the 26 km long glacier are entirely covered with a layer of debris.  The glacier is grey down there versus white as one may expect.  That is because the glacier moves very slow: about 10 meters per year as opposed to 2.5 - 5 meters per day for the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers.  While moving so slowly the glacier melts of on top and the rocks that are enclosed in the ice get deposited on top of the lower levels of ice, thereby forming the layer of debris.
